Episode #2 - Who is Jesus Christ?
Hello, and welcome to episode two of our show! We are so excited that you are joining us today to learn more about Jesus Christ and His Second Coming. I’m your host, Spencer. I’m really excited about this next episode and hope you enjoy it. When I first started to prepare for today's episode, I went to the Lord in prayer and meditation, asking Him what I should talk about.
The answer that came was to start by addressing who Jesus Christ actually is. As I've pondered this topic further and why the Lord wanted me to start here, it makes sense, because there are some who will tune into this episode and channel that have never really understood who Jesus Christ is. They've heard his name, and they've heard references to the Bible, but they don't really understand who Jesus Christ is, his relationship to us individually, and why he has a second coming, which will lead into the next episode.
So, I'm going to ask each of you listening and/or watching to start off by Liking this episode, subscribing to our channel so you can be notified when our next episode airs, and, most importantly, I'd like you to comment.
Comment with your testimony of who Jesus Christ is and your relationship with him. How did you gain your testimony about Jesus Christ and the role he plays in your life?
For those who hear the word 'testimony' and don't fully know what that means, it is your declaration of what you know for certain on a particular topic or about a particular person. You can bear testimony in all sorts of settings and on topics in addition to your religious beliefs. When you tell someone about a product you bought and love because it solves the 'x' problem, you are bearing testimony of that product. Similarly, testimony is used in legal cases often. People are asked to give sworn testimony about events that may have transpired, things they witnessed or heard, or even about a person's character. So, think of bearing your testimony about Jesus Christ in the same way. Testify, or share with us in the comments below what you know and believe about Jesus Christ.
Now, with that said, let's get into the topic of who Jesus Christ is, a little bit about his mortal life, his role in the grand scheme of things, his relationship to us, and what he has and will continue to do for our benefit and blessing. With that said, the reality is that there is way more information, and content on this subject than we can realistically cover in this episode. If there is an aspect or detail we don't discuss today that you would like to hear more about, please use the comment section to share that feedback.
As I pondered how to best approach this topic of discussing who Jesus Christ is, I started off by thinking about what the world would possibly see if he were on the earth today and had a social media account? What sort of information would be readily available on his profile? What would his tagline say? What would it say about underemployment or interests or hobbies? While this is a funny way to think about how Jesus might be presented to the world, it is also very limiting to explain who he is. So, I decided I probably needed to take another approach.
The next idea that came to mind is to look at the different names he goes by other than Jesus Christ. The reality is that in the Bible, he has 50 different names that are used to refer to him. When you add the Book of Mormon to your reading list, you get even more names that are used for Jesus. Each one gives a little different perspective on who he is. The most common ones used interchangeably are ‘the Savior’, or ‘the Lord’. In this episode, we are not going to go over all of these names. I would invite you, though, to spend your own time reviewing these different names and ponder on what they mean, and how that impacts you and your understanding of Jesus Christ. (I have had the thought about doing a separate series within this channel looking at each of these names in greater detail. If you find that of interest, please comment below so we can see how interesting or useful that would be to your study of Jesus Christ.)
Since there are so many names used for Jesus Christ, I realized those wouldn't be the only and best way in this video to examine who he is. As I continued to ponder and do some research for other ways to cover this topic, I was guided to a single document. As I read through this document, I realized that this was a great summary and overview of who Jesus Christ is, and the different aspects of his character and role in our lives, in the world, and in the future.
The document I'm referring to is called 'The Living Christ'. It was created and released to the world on January 1, 2000. It was created in response to the new millennium, a major milestone in the history of the world. This document was created and signed by the first presidency and quorum of the twelve apostles from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. These fifteen men came together and created a unified testimony of who Jesus Christ is and the critical things we need to know about him today.
For those of you who are not members of the LDS Church, I invite you to stay with me to hear this witness and testimony of Jesus Christ. If there is a part that you don't understand or fully agree with, that is fine. You are welcome to share those thoughts in the comments below, but please be civil and respectful. I do not want to turn off the commenting capability of this video, as it adds a lot of good dialog and discussion on this important topic.
As I go through this document, If I add some of my own thoughts or ideas, please note that these comments are purely my own. They are not the direct opinion or position of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. For anyone that wants to pull up and review this document on their own, I invite you to do so. I'll include a link in the description of this video to the declaration.
So, to dive in, the first thing I want to point out is that this declaration is the testimony of the modern-day apostles of Jesus Christ. If you are wondering what an apostle is, it is someone who essentially lives their life in devotion to the teachings of another. When Jesus Christ was alive on the earth in the Old World, modern-day Middle East, he called twelve apostles to follow him, learn of him, and then go out into the world and teach his gospel and doctrine to those that would listen. Jesus also called twelve apostles in ancient America to do the same thing. We can discuss the two sets of ancient apostles if that is of interest. If so, make sure to comment below. Like the apostles in the ancient days, Jesus Christ has called fifteen men today as prophets and apostles. Of those 15 men, 12 make up the modern-day apostleship. So, this declaration comes from modern-day apostles, and I think it is important to understand who the group is that is providing this testimony.
Alright, back to the declaration. It says the following, [Read the declaration].
Okay. There was a lot in there. We are not going to unpack these insights in this video. Instead, I'm going to invite you to ponder the words in the declaration. Use the link in the description to access a copy of it. Re-read it. Pray about this declaration and the truths contained inside. Seek your own understanding of who Jesus Christ is and what he means to you. Ultimately though, I invite you to come unto Him, learn of Him, find peace and joy in Him, and most importantly, learn to Hear Him.
I want to end with a scripture from the Book of Mormon that summarizes my testimony of Jesus Christ and why this channel exists.
For those who want to follow along, I'm reading out of 2 Nephi, chapter 25, verse 26, which reads, "And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins."
To those listening, I want you to understand who Jesus Christ is, and it will be essential in order to see and understand those things we will talk about in future episodes. My testimony for the world to hear is that, like the Apostles, I know that Jesus Christ lives. He plays a very big part in my life. I don't want to imagine the quality of life I would have without my testimony and His influence in my life. I'm really excited to see and participate in the events related to His return. I know that despite my imperfections and weaknesses, he still loves me, wants to help me change into a better version of myself, and to live with him and our Heavenly Father after I leave this mortal and telestial world. Amen.
